Una città che si entra dall’acquaA city you enter from the water

Six sestieri, one Grand Canal, a tide that commands. There is no road in: you arrive by rail, by bridge or by sea.

La cittàThe city

Sei sestieri attorno a un anello d’acquaSix quarters around a ring of water

Castello corre a est fino all’Arsenale. Venice reads better by sestiere than by map. San Marco carries the square, the doges’ palace and the basilica. Castello runs east to the Arsenale. Cannaregio holds the station and the Ghetto. Dorsoduro faces the Accademia and the Salute, San Polo holds the Rialto market, and Santa Croce is the land side, toward Piazzale Roma.

The tide is the true calendar. Sirens, raised walkways and the MOSE barriers at the inlets set the rhythm of the higher days. Read the tide bulletin in the morning, before you leave, not from a flooded square.

The gazette follows the city’s entries: the square, the museums, the water-bus lines, the islands, the high water, the seasons and the gates where you arrive.
